Game of Thrones returned to our screens last week after, well, far too bloody long away, and things continue to gather pace in Season 8 Episode 2, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

On the face of it, this week's instalment is still a lot of table-setting ahead of things really exploding into life (and death) next week. However, to dismiss this as a standard table-setter, like last week's was, ignores the character work at play here.

Beautifully written by Bryan Cogman, we get some of the richest character work we've had in years this week. From a brilliantly touching scene between Jaime and Brienne, to an all-important conversation between Jon and Daenerys, there's a LOT of work here that speaks to the depth of these characters and why we care so much about them.

It does all that while laying the groundwork for Episode 3, which is, of course, the Battle of Winterfell episode. As we go into the Miguel Sapochnik-directed epic, there are a lot of questions left behind from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Warning: contains major spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2.
