The Girl of Steel is back on top.

After a long wait, Supergirl has returned to The CW for its fourth season. The premiere, titled 'American Alien', was a multi-layered outing that masqueraded as a standard season-opener on the surface, while doing a lot more work underneath. It set up the season's new threat, teasing us with their motivations while also using it as a starting-point for its real purpose.

With the threat of anti-alien attacks looming, the show once again manages to effectively start conversations that quite frankly need to be had more often in real life. It uses two of its characters to do so, highlighting that there are fair points to both sides of the argument while enforcing that society shouldn't be afraid of acceptance.

Furthermore, the episode also employs some rather refreshing techniques to make us think one thing when something else is going on entirely, and it paves the way for a number of fascinating storylines to explore later down the line.

'American Alien' is without a doubt an effective season-opener that boasts some impressive new faces and an intriguing new villain, and though it's not perfect, it does set the stage for what appears to be an incredibly enticing season. Contains spoilers.
