Barry Allen and his merry band of superhero cohorts may currently have their hands full with the metahuman-slaying monster known as Cicada, but that didn't stop him from catching up with two different types of monsters in this week's encounter.

Returning from its two-week hiatus, The Flash took a detour from its main narrative to reintroduce us to both King Shark and Gorilla Grodd, as the team sought to administer their newly-created metahuman cure to a meta that actually wanted it (Shark) and inadvertently crossed paths with their old telepathic archnemesis (Grodd) in the process. This led to a surprisingly educational tale of love, heartache and morality (and, you know, an off-the-wall battle between monsters too).

Elsewhere, Joe West made his long-awaited return just in time to provide Iris with some much-needed fatherly advice and help her overcome some of her inhibitions after her recent brush with Cicada.

All in all, 'King Shark vs. Gorilla Grodd' exceeded expectations, with the all-out war between the two CGI monsters providing us with the most enjoyable episode of the season so far. Sometimes it's good to take a break from the main narrative and this was a shining example of that.
