On July 14th, 2014, WWE ran a promotional spot during Monday Night Raw which drew a fair bit of attention (as all good ads seek to do). Following a period of rumors and speculation, the orchestra depicted on screen cued up a theme which would be very familiar to fans of World Championship Wrestling from the later half of the '90s. As the mysterious figure in the black trenchcoat revealed himself to the viewer, it appeared that many a Monday Night Wars fan's dream had come true: Sting had signed on the dotted line and would finally appear... ...as a pre-order bonus in WWE 2K15. Say what you will about the spot, but it certainly did its job in getting the attention of the WWE Universe. As it should, given that those 54 seconds of theatrics cost the company a good $200,000. In case you haven't already, see the spot for yourself here:It's never been questioned that World Wrestling Entertainment has some of the best video package production people in the business, and as the above video demonstrates, they (and on occasion, their business partners) have never been afraid to go over the top with some of their advertisements. In fact, this relatively humble ad brings to mind numerous other ads which have been nothing short of ridiculous-- sometimes gloriously so-- and undoubtedly cost the company a lot more to produce than this video game spot, much less a video of a guy talking to the camera in a darkened room full of fog and wooden pallets (hi, Bray).
