To 'push' a pro wrestler means to attempt to shunt them up the card, hopefully towards the main event and World Title scenes. The idea behind pushing is that performers will create a stronger bond with the audience, who will realise the promotion featuring them is serious about making them a pivotal part of the roster. It's a simple concept, but it doesn't always work out well. On occasion, fans can rebel against the idea of a wrestler being pushed down their collective throats. Wrestling fans, much like those of many other forms of entertainment, enjoy the idea of largely being in control. There's a degree of ownership over wrestling, especially nowadays when everybody has grand ideas over how to improve the overall product. Using WWE as a prime example, there have been numerous examples of wrestlers fans simply have not accepted when pushed. The likes of Bobby Lashley and Ryback instantly spring to mind. Whilst these guys did have some level of popularity, they weren't fully embraced by the core audience. As such, their pushes fell away.
