20 WTF Moments From WCW Nitro (Feb 2nd, 1998)

Giants fined, a Regal return and Sting returns to the Nitro ring.

This is just the second 3 hour edition of the flagship show and it's interesting to see how the company fill the extra hour. The influx of WWF stars like the British Bulldog and Jim Neidhart has propped up the mid card to flesh it out a little more and the ongoing saga of the new World order and the beginning of them crumbling has some more time to play out on each episode. Going into this week's show, the big advertisement was the main event of Sting going one on one with Randy Savage, as well as the fallout from Kevin Nash using the illegal jacknife powerbomb the week before. Neither Bret Hart or Ric Flair made appearances this week, which seemed slightly strange. Last week, Bret made his intention to challenge the winner of Sting and Hogan for the WCW World Title but all we got of The Hitman was a video package replaying the old promo. Given that Bret came into WCW as the hottest star in wrestling at the time thanks to the Screwjob, he's already starting to blend into the background of the programme. Worrying, for sure. With all that mind, here are the 20 WTF Moments from the February 2nd episode of Nitro from 1998.....

20. Nitro In The ALAMO DOME!

Back in January 1997, The WWF were trying to sell the Royal Rumble at the Alamo Dome, which featured the homecoming of Shawn Michaels as he tried to reclaim his WWF Title from Sycho Sid. Alas, the company struggled to pack the fans into the building so they had to offer discount tickets and give away thousands of comps. Fast forward twelve months and WCW packed out the Alamo Dome with over 25,000 fans for Nitro on only a few weeks notice with no hassle. This shows you the power that WCW had as a wrestling company in early 1998. Sadly, this is a power they'd lose more and more within the next twelve months.
