As grizzled veteran Edge warned Becky Lynch not to let her underdog status define her and burn too many bridges in her prime, he looked lost in the moment. SmackDown 1000 was arguably the first time since retiring that Edge seemed intense, switched-on and enjoying his role. It was a throwback to days of old, and it rocked.

Younger fans haven't been privy to it, but there was a time when Edge was one of the best characters in WWE. There was also a period (mainly towards the start of his career) where things didn't look promising, and thank God Vince Russo's rumoured wish to make him a mute gimmick didn't ring true; over time, the Canadian's promo skills were one of his best assets.

Edge's story is one of a nerdy young wrestling fan who defied expectations to live out his dreams, win World Titles and headline against his heroes on WWE's biggest stage. Alongside those highs were tragic crashing lows, injuries and poor booking.
