7 Reasons Brock Lesnar Shouldn't Break CM Punk's Modern WWE World Championship Record
Lesnar's reign isn't worthy of such an accolade, to say the least.
On 20 November 2011, CM Punk defeated Alberto Del Rio to win the WWE Championship. 434 days passed before the most prestigious title in professional wrestling was ripped from his grasp, Punk finally coming up short against The Rock (of all people). While not an all-time record, Punk’s 434 days as champion stands proudly as the longest reign of the modern era.
Brock Lesnar is a matter of days away from surpassing CM Punk’s record. Lesnar defeated Goldberg for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 33, and has held the big red belt for over 400 days since. With no defences scheduled until after WWE Money in the Bank, it will take a minor miracle for CM Punk’s record to stay intact.
Wrestling statistics are meaningless at the end of the day, and the lengths of title reigns essentially come down to the erratic whims of a senile billionaire. But Brock Lesnar is no ordinary case, and there are a number of reasons why him breaking Punk’s record is a terrible idea.
And for the record, I am completely aware that the WWE and Universal Championships are different belts. The latter was brought in to counter the former, and are both acknowledged as ‘world’ titles. The comparison is obvious.
