Austin Theory Reveals Crucial Advice WWE Legend John Cena Gave Him
John Cena pulled WWE's Austin Theory aside backstage and gave him some advice.
John Cena once told Austin Theory that "nobody will connect to your performance unless they connect to your personality".
WWE's current 'Mr. MITB' told CBS Sports that he asked the veteran to explain what he meant during a crucial backstage chat. Going in-depth, Cena said that having great matches, performing killer moves and excelling bell-to-bell wasn't enough for the promotion.
He said that Theory should strive to create a connection with the core audience and go from there first. Then, if he had excellent matches, people would care more because they'd already taken some ownership of his personality during promos and other character skits.
How very wise.
Austin has never forgotten about this talk - he pointed out that pretty much everybody in WWE is good in-ring these days. Cena could see that the technical and athletic quality was higher than ever, but he didn't see a ton of workers who could relate to the fans via speech or identifiable/marketable traits.
Theory kept that in mind when he jumped up from NXT to the main roster. He's grateful that JC took the time to give him some guidance.
