Police in Hawaii are investigating B.J. Penn after a truck accident he was involved in, with early reports suggesting that he could have been under the influence whilst driving.

The statement released by the Hawaii Police Department clarified that the accident happened at 7:39 p.m. in Penn's hometown of Hilo. The truck he was driving was apparently 'speeding' and 'losing control', before it flipped outside of a shopping mall. Penn was then taken to a hospital for 'immediate care' which was 'paramount to his safety'.

The blood tests which were then taken from Penn triggered a DUI investigation. Those results will now be sent to the city prosecutor’s office 'for screening and potential charging.'

Penn has found himself in somewhat of a downward spiral since the tail-end of 2019 when he was released by the UFC after being involved in a brawl inside of a bar.

Dana White did go on record, promising Penn another fight in the UFC if he could get his life back on track. However, this news won't have aided any chances of a return to his old stomping grounds.

Penn's last fight was in May 2019, a bout which he lost via decision to Clay Guida at UFC 237 - his seventh loss in eight fights.
