Sami Zayn may have beaten Seth Rollins on Raw to take "The Architect's" spot in the 2017 Royal Rumble match, but fans who saw the bout know that it was only a victory in the technical sense.
Rollins had already nailed Zayn with a Pedigree, and he only lost to a roll-up after Triple H's music provided a distraction.
It was no accident that Zayn's win came without much accomplishment. According to The Wrestling Observer, there's currently backstage heat on Zayn, and it's been going on for a little while. On last week's Raw, the segment where Zayn, Rollins, and Roman Reigns met in the locker room to discuss strategy prior to their six-man tag match was meant to make Zayn look like "a total geek," with Zayn trying to pitch ideas to his partners and the former Shield members not exactly impressed.
There's no word as to why Zayn is currently in hot water, but real-life best friend Kevin Owens has previously described "The Underdog from the Underground" as someone who can be very passionate and anal about his performances in a manner that can rub people the wrong way.
