In what is some pretty huge news, it looks like we may - just may - finally get the CM Punk in-ring return that so many wrestling fans have long been hoping for.

As per Sean Ross Sapp at Fightful Select, the Second City Saint has reportedly been in talks over returning to the ring.

It's been over seven years since CM Punk last had an official match - that being as an entrant in the 2014 Royal Rumble - although the Straight-Edge Superstar has made a handful of incognito appearances at certain independent shows in the years since.

Shortly after that Rumble PPV, of course, Punk made his WWE exit and focussed on an MMA career and his acting work. While the MMA career didn't work out all that well, the Chicago native has certainly impressed in movies Girl on the Third Floor, the Soska Sisters' Rabid remake, and Jakob's Wife.

Punk did 'kind of' return to the WWE fold in November 2019, joining the weekly WWE Backstage broadcast. While that show obviously focussed on WWE action, the multiple-time World Champion's deal was solely with FOX rather than having any formal contract with WWE.

At this stage, there's no details on which promotion(s) CM Punk has been in talks with, but one has to imagine that every wrestling company on the planet would love Punk on their roster; be that in a part-time or full-time role.

Given how Tony Khan has teased something huge for September's AEW Grand Slam special, many had already offered up CM Punk as a possibility to become #AllElite.

Whether that indeed happens, we'll have to wait and see - although Sean Ross Sapp did indicate that AEW seems like the most realistic destination right now, and that certain WWE officials likewise expect Punk to land in All Elite Wrestling.
