Sunday at SummerSlam, Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins to become the first WWE Universal Champion, but his victory came with a price: during the course of the match, he suffered a severe shoulder injury. Though Balor was forced to vacate the title on Monday's Raw, WWE.com broke the news on Tuesday that he was resting after successful surgery.

The company has been vague regarding the exact details of Balor's injury, though they have confirmed that it occurred when Rollins powerbombed Balor into the guardrail outside the ring. According to WWE physician Chris Robinson, Balor's shoulder was dislocated on the spot, but he was able to pop it back into place. Robinson also stated, prior to the surgery, that the injury was a possible labrum tear which could keep Balor on the shelf for four to six months.

The post-surgery commentary from Dr. Jeffrey Dugas amended Robinson's statements, though not in a concrete way. Dugas called the injury "more severe than normal" and said "it did more damage than a standard shoulder dislocation where you simply tear the labrum." He did not offer an updated timetable on Balor's recovery and return, though he did called the prognosis "excellent," saying the former Universal Champion should be "back at full speed."
