Cody Rhodes failed to capture the United States Championship Monday night in his first shot at a title since returning to the company last month, though it came with a pretty big asterisk.

The American Nightmare faced off against US champ Theory in what turned into a really, really good match that hooked fans into believing that a title switch could be imminent. Rhodes kept the youngster off-balance throughout and looked like he might be closing in on a victory, nailing a Disaster Kick and Cody Cutter to set up a potential finish.

But then Seth Rollins reared his ugly head and attacked Rhodes for a DQ finish. Rollins proceeded to lay Cody out, beating him around ringside before stomping his head into the announce desk.

All of this seemingly will set up a third match between the two, with Rhodes having won both encounters at WrestleMania 38 and WM Backlash. After two straight wrestling matches, you've got to imagine this third contest will carry some stipulation... possibly Hell in a Cell since that's the next PLE. At the very least, we've got to be getting a no-DQ or Falls Count Anywhere match, but if you're going to do that and the cell is hanging above the ring, you might as well lower it and go for broke.

The real shame here is that with Roman Reigns holding both world titles and residing on SmackDown, there was a very real chance for Cody to win what essentially is the biggest singles title on Raw, and it felt like they might have pulled the trigger Monday night.
