Triple H was very straightforward with Pat McAfee about what he and WWE expected from the ex-NFL player's run on NXT earlier this year.

Laying it all out, 'The Game' said that nobody in the company (including himself) could tell Pat how to be himself. So, Trips repeated, the aspiring wrestler had some freedom to express himself on the mic during promos and get himself over.

That's something McAfee told Comic Book he greatly appreciated.

Pat had been slightly concerned about how he'd be perceived backstage by others, and he wasn't sure that he'd get more matches beyond his surprise NXT TakeOver XXX cracker with Adam Cole in August. Going in, McAfee told himself to leave everything in the ring, because he didn't know if WWE would give him any further opportunities to play wrestler.

"I viewed it as if it was my only opportunity I was ever going to get in my entire life", he said.

Thankfully, Pat turned some heads that night and WWE were interested in doing more. That support, combined with Triple H's assurances that he could be himself, meant the world to McAfee.
