WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz will put his belt on the line against Jeff Hardy on next week's Monday Night Raw episode.

Hardy earned the opportunity by winning a 15-man number one contender's battle royal featuring the likes of Finn Balor, Big Show, Elias, Jason Jordan, and Jeff's brother Matt on last night's show. The conclusion came when Jordan eliminated Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel simultaneously but spent a little too long celebrating, allowing Hardy to throw him out.

It will be Jeff's first singles title shot since him and Matt returned to WWE at WrestleMania 33, and his first Intercontinental Title match since losing the belt to Chris Jericho on a March 2008 episode of Raw.

Hardy is a four-time IC Champion, having first captured the belt in April 2001. His most notable reign started in September 2007, when he overcame Umaga for the title, then held it for 189 days, mounting successful defences against the likes of Shelton Benjamin and Carlito.

General Manager Kurt Angle also announced that the Intercontinental Championship will be on the line at No Mercy (24 September), though the participants are yet to be confirmed.
