Jim Ross Recalls Vince McMahon's HUGE WWE Commentary Lesson
AEW's Jim Ross says it's easy to forget Vince McMahon's golden WWE commentary rule.
Jim Ross regularly sprinkles praise for WWE chief Vince McMahon into episodes of his 'Grilling JR' podcast.
The weekly pod isn't some bitter anti-WWE rant from an AEW staffer, which is great. If anything, the latest edition flattered McMahon's old commentary style; Ross said that he supports Vince's golden rule. It remains one of the best lessons about announcing he has ever been taught.
Anyone who listens to Bruce Prichard's own pod will know all about the phrase, "Pronouns, pal!". Basically, Vince isn't fond of his announcers saying things like, "He hit him with that steel chair". McMahon wants to know who "he" is. His preference, for example, would be, "Seth Rollins hit Cesaro with that steel chair".
JR admits he's guilty of doing the opposite at times on AEW Dynamite, but said it's a rule he tries to follow to this day. It's one McMahon always hammered home when they were working together in WWE.
Vince's thinking is that someone watching the broadcast might not know who "he" is. If commentators repeatedly pound on ring names and nicknames, then those become key words to the viewer and stick in their minds.
Makes sense.
