John Cena approached Tommy Dreamer back in 2002-2003 and asked if it'd be fine to start using a modified version of his finisher.

Dreamer told this story on Busted Open Radio; according to the former ECW lieutenant, Cena walked up to him backstage near the beginning of John's WWE career and clued him in on discussions he'd been having with the company's creative team.

Cena wanted to get permission from Tommy before he began using the FU/Attitude Adjustment, because Dreamer's own finish looked sort of similar. To his credit, JC said: "If you don't want me to do it, I won't do it".

Dreamer appreciated that respect, and said it was totally fine if WWE fancied making the move Cena's own. He could see that John was only trying to make a name for himself. Besides, he wasn't the one who came up with the idea in the first place.

Creative did.

Tommy described the brief conversation as "super cool", and said he always wanted Cena to succeed after experiencing his class firsthand. Summing it up, Dreamer added: "He cared when he didn't have to care".
