Speculative reporting in this week's Wrestling Observer has strongly implied that Vince McMahon is looking beyond both WWE Champion AJ Styles and Universal Champion Brock Lesnar for 'Big Match John's New Orleans opponent.

Commenting on the fact that a rumoured Styles/Cena outing is potentially back off the table, Observer scribe Dave Meltzer posited Bill Goldberg, The Undertaker, Dave Batista or even Hulk Hogan as possible options for the 'free agent' following his latest underwhelming return to television on the Christmas Day edition of Monday Night Raw.

Ironically, AJ Styles was the only opponent in 2017 to really keep the ailing visage of 'Big Match John' alive. Cena's creative value diminished significantly throughout the year, as matches with The Miz, Rusev, Baron Corbin, Roman Reigns and others were marred by uncharacteristically indifferent, selfish and underwhelming displays from the 16-time WWE/World Heavyweight Champion.

That said, Cena's taken something of a backseat at the 'Show Of Shows' since his box office-busting WrestleMania 29 main event against The Rock in 2013. Working in the middle of the card against Bray Wyatt, Rusev and The Miz since then, 'The Champ' will likely be propelled back into a headline spot should any of the aforementioned potential dream matches be announced for April 8th.
