WWE is reportedly making a "strong play" for New Japan Pro Wrestling's 'Switchblade' Jay White, whose contract with the 'King of Sports' is thought to expire at the end of January.

This is according to a new report from the Super J-Cast. Their sources indicate that there are doubts over White renewing with NJPW, with the chances of the New Zealander going to WWE said to be "50/50."

This comes just three days after White failed to capture the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships from Kota Ibushi at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 15. Felled after a near 50-minute battle, 'Switchblade' proceeded to cut the promo of his life, saying that 6 January's New Year Dash show was the last on his contract but after that, his time "should be spent somewhere else." White was then pinned by Tomohiro Ishii in a 10-man tag at New Year Dash, strengthening talk of his departure.

White has been with NJPW since late 2014. Returning from an international excursion in November 2017, he developed the 'Switchblade' persona, joined Bullet Club, and quickly ascended to leadership status within the heel group. He was crowned IWGP Heavyweight Champion at The New Beginning in Osaka 2019, felling the legendary Hiroshi Tanahashi just five weeks after the Ace's emotional triumph over Kenny Omega.
