If it survives beyond Justice League and The Batman, the so-called DC Expanded Universe of movies will have another hero, in the shape of SHAZAM!

There had been some suggestions that DC would keep the film separate from the mainline of movies, because the film is being developed by New Line Cinema and The Rock's Seven Buck Productions.

But that is not the case. In an interview with Newsweek, Dany Garcia, who is Dwayne Johnson's manager and co-producer has revealed that Shazam and Black Adam will indeed exist in the same universe as Superman, Batman, The Flash and the Suicide Squad.

“Shazam! is to live in the same world [as the other films] but we have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors… it’s a different set-up."

Garcia doesn't have any concerns over the critical reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad either:

"We don’t feel fettered by, or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation - that we be able to control the tone and the voice, and do it the way we want to.”

...Until the studio get concerned and barge in to change it up under the director's nose.

So how close will the connections be?

“It needs to be of the world. You’ve got Justice League, Wonder Woman with a different director, so you’re going to see different points of view. I think by the time we land with [Shazam!] we’ll fit nicely within the world that’s been created, but not such a shorthand relationship. [It’ll be] enough that people say, ‘Oh, this is within the family,’ but the culture will be a little different.”

Look, if anyone can, The Rock can. He's basically a phenomenon at the minute, pulling in massive box office numbers no matter what he's in, and the moment he steps into a comic book movie it's going to get even bigger.

But what shape is SHAZAM! currently in?

“We’re getting [script] drafts in… it’s important to make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam, which is Dwayne’s part. We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible.”

They want to hop they get it out before any possible implosion of the entire DCEU.
