Triple H was supposed to work an angle-come-match with Gable Steveson at WrestleMania 38.

WWE planned that interaction before Trips' health scare changed everything. Instead of working, 'The Game' formally retired over the bumper weekend by leaving his boots in-ring and waving goodbye to his active wrestling career. Now, he says, he'll never work a match again.

Hunter told BT Sport that he was all set to "do something" with Steveson on the grandest stage possible - that booking was a concerted effort to "try and get [Gable] launched" as a viable WWE talent that fans should care about. It didn't happen, obviously, so people will never know how successful Triple H's moment would've been.

It is fascinating to think 'what if' though.

On retirement, Trips said that Stephanie McMahon was actually more gutted than he was when she found out that defibrillator use would end his active run as a worker. Steph was emotional, but Hunter admitted that he wasn't too upset, because his priorities had shifted.

Besides, Triple H still gets to live vicariously through younger WWE stars by helping them create moments and memories.
