The Wrestling Observer has dished details on exactly why Jim Ross didn't work the commentary desk as usual for Friday's episode of AEW Rampage.

JR has become a regular alongside the likes of Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and even Chris Jericho on the All Elite 'B' show, but he didn't sit in on comms during Wednesday's bumper Dynamite/Rampage taping. Dave Meltzer says Tony Khan gave Ross a little time off instead.

The iconic announcer was granted some leave so he could attend the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando. That game featured Jim's beloved Oklahoma Sooners vs. Florida State, so there was probably no way JR was missing that one. He's a huge football fan, and wanted to be in the house to cheer on his team.

Khan apparently didn't want to get in the way of that, so he gave Jim a little holiday as a show of good faith. It's believed the ex-WWE star will be back on announcing duties for next week's edition of Rampage though. That's become the only real place to see and hear Ross on AEW programming throughout 2022.

Here's to more in 2023.
