What's going on with Daniel Bryan, who hasn't wrestled since April?

WWE's continued mentions of Daniel Bryan on company television aren't to be taken as a sign that the former World Champion is on his way back to the promotion, reports Dave Meltzer in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The report states that WWE are only mentioning Bryan for storyline purposes. That's it. The 40-year-old is being presented as the reason Edge didn't become Universal Champion at WrestleMania 37, as the Canadian prepares to challenge Roman Reigns at Money in the Bank 2021 (18 July).

Edge and Reigns were originally booked to go one-on-one at 'Mania. Bryan was inserted into the feud and added to the match two weeks before 37, making it at Triple Threat, which Reigns won by pinning both challengers simultaneously.

Meltzer notes that nobody knows what Bryan's plans are at the moment. If he has signed anywhere, WWE or otherwise, it is being kept a secret.

Bryan's WWE contract legitimately expired on 4 May, which came a few days after he'd lost a championship vs. career match with Reigns on SmackDown. Thus ended a decade-long run with the world's biggest promotion that yielded five World Title runs.
