WWE Legend Says He "Hated" Playing This Classic Gimmick
Playing this old heel gimmick did nothing for a WWE Hall Of Famer. He "hated" it.
Right To Censor wasn't for everybody, and it definitely wasn't for Charles Wright.
The WWE Hall Of Famer has never been shy about disliking his time as 'The Goodfather'. Recently, Wright reiterated his intense "hatred" for the character on Chris Van Vliet's 'Insight' podcast. The gimmick is one he'll never be at peace with.
Wright went from playing a fun-loving pimp (wrestling during the 'Attitude' era, people) to a stuck-up, reformed do-gooder who blasted his prior antics. He told Van Vliet that he wasn't hot on RTC from the off - Wright approached Vince McMahon backstage and said, "It's time for me to go".
That wasn't an isolated incident.
The Godfather guise was a send up of Wright's real-life job. No, he wasn't a pimp, but he did run several strip clubs in the Las Vegas area. It was actually his wife who came up with the persona, but McMahon wanted to move on from it come the year 2000.
Wright...didn't. That's partly why he hated being 'The Goodfather' for a spell. He wasn't having fun anymore, and decided he needed to take a break from wrestling.
