Since their departure from TNA turned ugly - mostly due the company's insistence that they owned the rights to the Hardys' gimmick and characters - the brothers have been the talk of the wrestling world.

The current Ring of Honor tag team champions recently boasted that they signed the biggest contract in that company's history, but it's since been rumored the deal was short term, leaving the two open to negotiate with other organizations, including, of course, WWE.

Several weeks ago it was reported that talks between the brothers and their former employer were "looking good", although a deal had yet to be reached. Then the Ring of Honor appearance happened and threw everyone for a loop, but the clarification on the deal's length changes things again.

Now Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting that WWE has officially offered The Hardy Boyz a contract to return to the promotion were they became superstars. Matt is currently embroiled in a legal dispute over whether he or TNA owns the rights to the characters and universe that he's created, so if the two choose to accept WWE's offer it'll be interesting to see which version of the brothers WWE chooses to use.

One the one hand, "Broken" Matt and Brother Nero are two of the most discussed non-WWE talents in the entire world. On the other, Vince McMahon has shown an aversion to using anything that wasn't created under his company's umbrella, and the temptation to return the ageing duo to the nostalgia of their fishnet shirts and baggy pants era would likely be hard for him to resist.

There's no question that they should be utilizing Broken Matt and Brother Nero instead of the 2000 version of the Hardys. And of course, WWE can always push the reset button and return them to their original gimmicks if/when their current personas fizzle out.

Hopefully the animosity that has sneaked into the legal dispute - including that infamous tweet from Reby - will subside, and we'll see the Hardys continue to entertain us, be that on WWE, Ring of Honor or any other promotion of their choosing.
