8 Times Asgard Went To War
For a place called The Realm Eternal, Asgard sure does get destroyed a lot.
You know who's great? Thor. You know what Thor is great at? War. So, what could possibly be better than Thor waging war? A whole realm of gods waging war on whoever was dumb enough to piss them off that week. Thankfully when you have a king that's as stubborn and as bullheaded as Odin, there is no shortage of villains, empires, and cosmic entities that want nothing more than to burn your realm to the ground.
Everyone from Galactus to the United States government have tried at one point or another to take Asgard down a peg or two. Unfortunately for them, Asgard lives up to its name as the realm Eternal, because even after numerous battles, wars and false Ragnaroks, Asgard is still standing.
Thor has always been a reliable source of action in Marvel Comics, and while he has some epic solo fights, his best fights are always the one where Asgard is right behind him screaming bloody murder.
So, whether they're warring against the Shi'ar, Svartalfheim, or even Earth, here are the absolute best times Asgard went to war...
8. The Fall Of Asgard
Never satisfied with his brother destined to replace their father as king of Asgard, Loki has always been thinking of various schemes to ensure he's gets the throne. But proving that the person who wants to be king doesn't always make for the best one, we have the Fall of Asgard storyline written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby.
With Odin having entered the Odinsleep, Loki seizes the opportunity by attacking Asgard with an army of giants. Taking advantage of the chaos from the battle, Loki slips into Odin's chamber and takes the Imperial Ring from the sleeping All Father, and proceeds to name himself the new king of Asgard.
However, with Loki's rise to power comes the rise of Surtur. A fire giant with arguably more power than Odin, Surtur marches towards Asgard vowing to destroy it, while raining fire upon the realm. Terrified at the prospect of losing everything he has just earned, Loki flees to Earth leaving Asgard without a king. Thankfully, Thor and the armies of Asgard were able to buy enough time for Odin to awaken and banish Surtur and reclaim his throne.
