Thor: 10 Legendary Mjolnir Facts

Only the worthiest of fans know everything about the mythical hammer of the Thunder God.

Mjolnir is the primary weapon of the Thunder God, superhero, and current King of Asgard, Thor. Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Jack Kirby, and Joe Sinnott, Mjolnir first premiered in Journey into Mystery #83, but wasn’t mentioned by name until Thor #135. This all-powerful item is typically depicted as a large grey sledgehammer with a short round handle, wrapped in brown leather culminating in a looped lanyard.

Mjolnir was crafted from a nugget of Uru - a nigh-invulnerable Asgardian metal - by the Dwarves of Nidavellir under the order of Odin, the All-Father of Asgard. The Uru has some amazing properties and has survived heat as high as that of the heart of a sun and blasts powerful enough to shatter planets. Very few elements can stand up to a smashing blow from Mjolnir, even the armor of the cosmic Celestials.

The hammer bestows upon its wielder a number of powers and abilities, including the manipulation of all forms of weather. Thor can actually control the weather without Mjolnir, but the mythical hammer allows him to focus that ability. Mjolnir is also capable of firing a number of energy bolts such as mystical energy, Anti-Force, Thermo-Blast, and Thor's own God energy. By spinning the hammer quickly, hurling it with immense strength, and holding onto the strap, Mjolnir also allows its wielder to fly at great speeds.

10. Mjolnir Can Do That?

There are a number of unique powers that Mjolnir bestows on anyone worthy that some might find unusual or even odd. For one, the hammer is essentially a universal translator. It allows its user to speak and understand the languages of any race, on any planet, anywhere. Also, it can send psychic messages anywhere in the Nine Realms and, using the hammer, Thor can recall past events.

Mjolnir has a series of dark and rarely used powers. As a quasi-religious artifact, it is particularly deadly to vampires and the undead. It can tap into dark dimensions and Nether Realms like the Asgardian Hel, and the hammer has the ability to manipulate souls and draw the life force directly from a person. It was also able to draw the powers of the Wrecking Crew from their bodies back into the Wrecker, who received his powers from Loki and shared them with his team.

Likewise, Mjolnir gives Thor or others diverse powers that are otherwise unrelated. For the God of Thunder, he has the ability to become invisible and intangible while holding this weapon and can also disrupt the intangibility powers of others like his teammate, the Vision. Because of the enchantment of Odin, Thor could transform between his own form and that of Donald Blake by striking the hammer on the ground. No other force in existence could transform Mjolnir.
