Even though the years of studios tying down movie stars for 10-picture contracts in the hope that their presence alone will be enough to get bums in seats are long in the past, actors are still very clearly integral to the movie-making process.

Hell, if it wasn't for the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark you could argue the world-conquering MCU would have never gotten off the ground, while ensemble pieces like the upcoming Once Upon A Time In America are already the most anticipated releases of 2019 because of the on-screen talent they've courted.

Of course, with casting still being so important, one bad egg can potentially sour the whole project. Sofia Coppola's turn in The Godfather Part III is probably the most classic example, but more recent duds include Quentin Tarantino's wonky role in Django Unchained, Forest Whitaker in Rogue One and Ben Affleck in Justice League.
