Since the earliest days of civilisation, animals have played their role in our history. From the Egyptians who worshipped them like gods, to the War Generals who trained them for battle and to this day where we flock to see them star on the silver screen. We cant explain it but were drawn to animals and they have a firm place in our hearts, be it their cuteness, their integrity or even their deadliness. Every child at one stage has asked their Mum and Dad for a pet, and there are some film animals weve all dreamt of taking home and keeping forever. From the spirited Marley or the (more unobtainable) orca from free Willy. Here are ten animals that have charmed their way into our hearts. Writers Note: After careful consideration, I have decided to remove Disney animals from inclusion in this list. The sheer volume of characters available would have overcome this list. Theyll hopefully be getting an article of their own in the foreseeable future. Beware; there will be spoilers.
Honourable Mention Elvis The Swan (Hot Fuzz)
Elvis is one of the underrated stars of Hot Fuzz (arguably Simon Pegg and Nick Frosts funniest outing), a swan who escapes from captivity and proves near-impossible for police officers Nicholas (Pegg) and Danny (Frost) to capture. Throughout the film, Elvis makes sporadic appearances dotted around the village of Sandford until Nicholas finally apprehends him at the end of the film. The reason Elvis doesnt make the top ten is because hes disobedient, elusive and violent which are not the qualities one looks for in a pet. However, it is those qualities that make him the true hero of the film. It wasnt Nicholas or Danny who defeated the bad guy; it was Elvis and his impressive Swan-headbutt. Hes a worthy addition to the police force (service).
