Although Halloween is a time for frights and horror, not everyone wants to be scared. Darkness and fear doesn't always need to imply a negative experience. There is plenty of goofy and campy fun to be had in the macabre.

When Halloween comes around, many people like to take full advantage of this and experience something that encompasses the spirit of the holiday, without keeping them awake at night. There have been some classic films that strike a great balance of being spooky but not too frightening.

These films subscribe to such descriptions. They revel in the gothic and create fun experiences out of themes of death and darkness. But they don't go so far as to alienate those who find horror a difficult genre to enjoy.

We all are afraid of things that we cannot understand, but these movies seek to cure that by making us laugh at them. To enjoy looking at such challenging scenarios makes the audience feel comfortable whilst addressing some serious issues.

This Halloween, if you want a break from the likes of The Conjuring and Insidious, check out some of these non-scary classics.

10. Edward Scissorhands

Tim Burton is going to make a few appearances on this list, as his style is the perfect blend of gothic aesthetic and wholesome fun narratives. The filmmaker's approach to having his projects look daunting, but telling funny and goofy stories is part of what helps to give him a unique identity.

Edwards Scissorhands is one of the creator's most charming productions. The story follows a family who brings the strange - seemingly - human Edward into their home. He is the creation of an inventor who lived at the house on the hill of their suburban town before his untimely death. As Edward adjusts to this new place, he thrives. But eventually, his differences become too overpowering.

The best element of the film is its focus on the monotony of suburban life. The injection of Edward's presence instils incredible curiosity from all the homeowners as their existence is otherwise plagued by the same day in, day out mundanity. This gives it a palpable sense of how the macabre can be so fascinating, because it is a break from routine.

Finally Edward himself - played by Johnny Depp - is unbelievably likeable and makes the audience quickly sympathise with him.
