Great new characters are in short supply. Or so it seems, from the overwhelming amount of remakes, reboots, and sequels flooding the movie industry today. 2013 was a rough year for original films - amongst the top 10 highest grossing films of the year, only one of them (Gravity) was a purely original film, not based on any pre-established franchise or source material. The original character market has rarely been stretched so thin. But that is not to say last year was a total wash out. Despite a great majority of memorable characters springing from established works - 12 Years a Slave, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Fruitvale Station spring to mind - there was a healthy crop of iconic new characters, created through good screenwriting, good acting, and quite often both. So let us first reminisce on those movie characters from 2013 that really left a lasting impression. Some of these characters are incredibly likeable, others detestable, but all will occupy our thoughts going into post-Oscar season 2014!
