As awards season gets in full swing, film fans are again reminded of the fickle nature of the Academy that leaves them swearing off the Oscars altogether year-in and year-out.

Every year, fans cry foul for their favourite movies that got egregiously snubbed, and this perceived snobbery is surely no more apparent than in the blockbuster sphere.

Mad Max: Fury Road actually being taken seriously as an awards threat in this year's Oscars (and even winning the most awards of the night) proves that Hollywood blockbusters can aspire to awards glory, but historically this is generally not the case at all, especially beyond crafts awards.

These recent blockbusters may vary wildly in quality overall, but each brought something to the table that makes it worthy of awards consideration and, yes, the actual gold statue outright. But with the Academy being how they are, they're destined to be snubbed come February.

Here are 10 blockbusters from 2016 that should win Oscars (but won't).

10. Zootopia (Best Original Screenplay)

Why It Should Win: Zootopia isn't just the smartest animated film of the year, it's also one of the most current, hilarious and charming movies of all of 2016, regardless of format.

Taking racism and overt stereotyping to task in a way that's both clever and non-intrusive to the narrative, Zootopia provides an important lesson to children while wrapping it around a highly entertaining crime caper narrative sure to entertain adults.

In short, it's the best case scenario for a movie like this: it has something to say but doesn't let that get in the way of the fun.

Why It Won't: If any animated film indeed scores a screenplay nod this year, it's much more likely to be the nostalgia-driven Finding Dory, given Pixar's Oscar darling status. It's also going to majorly hurt Zootopia that it was released all the way back in March, almost a year before the 2017 Oscars will take place.
