10 Blockbusters From 2016 That Should Win Oscars (But Won't)

9. Star Trek Beyond (Best Makeup & Hairstyling)

Kubo And The Two Strings Oscar
Paramount Pictures

Why It Should Win: Star Trek Beyond's makeup work soared high above any other blockbuster this past summer, and contributes hugely towards the plausibility of the array of alien characters the Enterprise crew encounters.

The clear highlights here are Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella being rendered practically unrecognisable as the villainous Krall and alien sidekick Jaylah respectively, and considering the importance of their roles, the jaw-dropping makeup has a major impact on the end product.

Why It Won't: Though Trek could very well make the nominations stage as this category is rather permissive towards mainstream fare (hell, they nominated the Eddie Murphy movie Norbit back in 2008) and 2009's Star Trek actually won the very same Oscar, this is much more likely to go to something prestigious like Martin Scorsese's Silence or a genre film with much bigger box office appeal, like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
