Britain has a wonderful history of cinema, as the country has generated some of the best actors, filmmakers and writers in the medium. Even so, the Sci-Fi genre tends to feel more at home in the American market, thanks to the typically high production costs, bombastic set-pieces and swelling scale.
Despite this, British cinema has had its fair share of the cake, as there have been some genuinely profound and enjoyable Sci-Fi movies created in the UK. You'll probably think of successful flicks like About Time, A Clockwork Orange or 1984, but what about the ones that you missed?
The following ten entries are some of the best examples of Sci-Fi in the entire world, but it's doubtful that you managed to catch them.
So if you're searching for some great flicks to indulge your geekier side, look no further.
10. Monsters
This movie is an outstanding example of how you can make an impact without needing a huge budget or star power. It was the directorial debut of Gareth Edwards, now famed for directing Godzilla and Rogue One, and it's clear that he poured his heart and soul into it.
Monsters is a dark and violent film, which has a surprisingly beautiful romantic side to it. The plot follows a cynical journalist named Andrew, who treks across a devastated Mexico. He attempts to survive the onslaught of an alien threat, to reach the US border, all while accompanied by his employee's daughter. As the pair work their way through the destructive land and horrifying threats, they bond and survive together.
Despite being based in Mexico and populated by American actors, the film was created and released by a British company, making it appropriate for this list.
Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able (the lead pair) have bountiful chemistry here, as their harsh environment is genuinely terrifying, and it's clear how much they need each other, creating a heartwarming centre inside this post-apocalyptic movie. It is a ton of fun, thanks to the incredibly inventive aliens and the charming dynamic between the lead characters.
