9. Under The Skin

Science Fiction is often formed of outlandish set-pieces, over-the-top scenarios and fantasy elements, but sometimes a quieter and more intimate film can be just as good. That is certainly the case with this terrifying movie, which spends most of its time crawling at a slow pace, only to ramp you up with extreme moments of horror.

Under the Skin follows a mysterious unnamed woman prowling the streets of Scotland on the hunt for men. This hunter has very sinister intentions, as she uses her feminine wiles to lure unsuspecting prey before leaving them to a tragic fate. After a painful amount of time seeing her hunt, the protagonist eventually starts to go through an identity crisis and attempts to forge her own path.

Scarlet Johansson plays the leading role here, and her performance is breathtaking. You truly feel just as coerced by her charms as her victims, and it helps the film to feel exciting despite the lack of action.

Another element that keeps you on your toes is the phenomenal score from Mica Levi, who creates a sound that feels appropriately alien and bursts onto the scene at times, giving you a considerable fright.
