10 Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time

10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

The world was wondering how Steven Spielberg could possibly follow a masterpiece like Jaws and he certainly didn't disappoint. Close Encounters is a very strange kind of alien based movie because it presents the presence of extra-terrestrial life as more curious than sinister. The narrative focus of the story is also very interesting because it decides to focus more on one man, his family and the effect of alien interference on their lives. The tone that Spielberg gives the film is very ethereal and dreamlike while adding a sense of realism to the more fantastic elements that suits Close Encounters very well. However, the film's greatest asset is it's brilliant ending where the audience finally gets to see the mother ship that had been plaguing Richard Dreyfuss' character the entire movie. The optimistic ending also helps to cement Close Encounters into the catagory of one of the best Sci-Fi's ever made.
