9. Solaris (1972)
Solaris is an absolutely brilliant portrait of one man and the troubles that plague his consciousness. Andrei Tarkovsky directs the film with just the right amount of restraint to let the human element of the story take center stage while the special effects of the titular planet Solaris are amazing even today. There are very few movies in history that can blend the use of special effects with a gripping story as well as Solaris. Where a lot of filmmakers have to rely on spectacle to cover their lack of proper story telling ability and character development Tarkovsky does the exact opposite of that. He uses the beauty of space to mirror the emptiness that the main character, Kris Kelvin, feels within himself after the loss of his wife and the end result is a bleak yet hopeful film.
