When you've watched lots of horror movies, it can become hard to get shocked anymore. Oh wow, the celebrity actor is the killer; who could have seen that coming? Wait, the franchise villain is alive in a post-credits scene? That's never happened before. The creepy looking house is haunted? No way!

Yes, it's safe to say that lovers of the spooky genre are used to almost everything thrown at them. However, that's what makes it all the more exciting when a horror flick comes along and douses your expectations in gasoline before chucking a lit cigarette at them.

Plenty of titles mess with your expectations by throwing predictability by the wayside and taking you on an unexpected adventure. Some do it by playing into typical tropes before shockingly subverting them. Others even lure you in with their presentation to make you think you're watching an entirely different movie before revealing the truth.

Whatever it is, it often makes for thrilling viewing.

The following ten movies all did something to this effect, taking you on a journey you didn't know you'd signed up for. So, buckle up and get ready for the ride!

10. Climax

Okay, so it's a fully-realistic horror movie about a troupe of dancers who get high during a rehearsal? That doesn't sound all too disturbing. Well, strap yourselves in because this movie is anything but an easy watch.

Climax is a film that lures you in by taking its time to establish the set-up before delving into depravity and refusing to pulls its punches. The first 40 minutes, give or take, are comprised of simple interactions between the characters and lavish dance sequences, with not a whiff of horror about. But that all changes past the hour mark, when things quickly devolve into insanity.

This is a deeply immersive and anxiety-riddled horror that sees tension and irrationality fill its small setting, with the isolated location making every character feel trapped. It also comes with plenty of disturbing moments of violence and intense psychological horror.

Anyone who is familiar with the movie's writer/director Gaspar Noe - the controversial mind behind movies like Irreversible and I Stand Alone - might see the depravity of this film coming. But for everyone else, it hits you like a truck.

Who knew dancers could be so terrifying?
