10 Horror Movies That Turned Out Nothing Like You Were Expecting
9. School Of The Holy Beast
Some horror fans enjoy a good slasher flick, or an amusing horror comedy. But, there are also those who like something a bit edgier, like a healthy dose of nunsploitation. Hey, whatever floats your boat.
School of the Holy Beast is one such film that falls under this very specific subgenre. However, you'll quickly find that while it is undoubtedly risqué, it's also surprisingly nuanced and profound. At least, as much as a movie about nun torture can be.
This film arose from the Toei Company's Pinky Violence era, where the studio pumped out controversial flicks full of sex and violence in the 1970s. Still, despite being a part of this genre, the film has some surprising artistic merit to it.
Sure, its subject matter is unapologetically exploitative, but it's shot beautifully with luscious physical sets and sequences with strong visuals. Additionally, it explores poignant themes about the corruption of power within organised religion.
It's not a perfect film, but let's be honest, it's a movie about masochistic nuns; it would still be a shock if it was even half as good.
