10 Legitimate Criticisms Of The Avengers

By Edward Owen /

It seems like we bash The Dark Knight Trilogy a lot here at What Culture but for my money, as long as it's well-written and interesting, it's all good stuff. For instance, take yesterday's loving critique by Alex Leadbeater on 10 Legitimate Criticisms Of The Dark Knight Rises. I really enjoyed it €“ it was entertaining, made good points, and made clear throughout that TDKR is a really good film. Yet still, an argument raged in the comments underneath, asking why we can't cast the same critical eye on other superhero films, specifically The Avengers. Well, this got me curious, and I decided that perhaps we should shine our critical (some might call it nit-picking) spotlight onto Joss Whedon's epic. And you know what? There is some stuff there which we can pick up and ask questions about, so I've decided to write about them. You might call it pedantic, but hell, it certainly generated debate in the comments, so it's probably worthy of it's own article. Don't get me wrong, I love The Avengers €“ I come to praise it, not bury it. But even Joss Whedon's finest can sometimes leave some threads and plot errors dangling. So without further ado, I'm going to point some out. Obviously, the SPOILER WARNING is in effect. Despite all this, it's an excellent film and if you haven't seen it you totally should. It's the most fun you can have in two-and-a-half hours without having to change your trousers. Now that's out the way, let's get down to it, shall we? I promise to avoid Batman whenever I can.
