It sure is a strange time to be a movie executive right now.
Though every studio worth their salt is desperately trying to replicate the commercial success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this year's summer of movies has - so far - been an absolute bloodbath in terms of sequels and reboots failing to catch fire with general audiences.
This has resulted in several apparently "inevitable" sequels being quietly cancelled by an over-eager, backpedalling studio, not to ignore films that have become casualties of the Disney/Fox merger, and projects that were surreptitiously scrubbed from a studio's slate as they hoped that nobody would actually notice.
The fickle nature of Hollywood ensures that movies can evaporate or get the green-light on a whim, and though each of these planned films certainly had the potential to become a sizeable box office hit, fate seemingly had other plans.
Whether this summer is simply a fluke of failures or a wider indication of audience fatigue with soulless spectacle remains to be seen, but its knock-on effect across the industry has already been widely felt...
