10 More Movies Already Cancelled In 2019 (And Why)

What We Knew

In 2017, Die Hard producer Len Wiseman confirmed that a sixth Die Hard film, focused on a young John McClane, was in early development.

This was later confirmed to be titled McClane, and would be part-prequel, part-sequel, cutting between a present day McClane (Bruce Willis) and a younger iteration of the action icon in the 1970s.

Wiseman, who helmed the surprisingly decent fourth film in the series, has also been attached to direct.

Why It Was Cancelled & The Future

Though the script has gone through several iterations over the last few years, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was working on one as recently as February, McClane has been beset by an avalanche of bad news that suggest it's been slyly cancelled.

Despite Bonaventura handing in a script in February, Fox executives reportedly hadn't bothered to read it before the Disney/Fox merger was completed.

With many key distribution personnel at Fox being fired during the merger and McClane having no place on Disney's already announced release slate through 2021, the film's progress has lost major momentum, with Bonaventura himself claiming back in April that he had no idea what was going on with it.

Elsewhere, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played McClane's daughter Lucy in the two prior movies, cast doubt on the film ever getting made due to scheduling reasons, above all else.

Though 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard was a solid box office success, between its near-universal critical and fan scorn, not to mention Bruce Willis' accelerating age and clear disdain for actual acting these days, it's probably for the best that the series goes into retirement.
