10 More Ways The Prequels Made Star Wars A Better Saga

By Marcus Doidge /

Attack of the Clones is set 10 years after Phantom Menace and Anakin Skywalker is a Jedi in training - a Jedi who is showing considerable power. The prequel trilogy continued to bridge the gap towards the original trilogy and as expected some fans loved it and some fans continued to question Lucas€™s approach to his ever growing saga. I have to say I loved Attack of the Clones and still do, but I certainly consider it the weakest in the prequel trilogy, despite the fact its set pieces are some of the best in the entire Star Wars saga (see some of my favourite elements here). Anyway, once again, I€™m here to delve a little deeper into the events we see unravel in Attack of the Clones and what the knock on effects are to the original trilogy. There€™s so much in Episode II that redefines what we know about episodes IV to VI and here are ten more reasons that the prequel trilogy made for a better Star Wars saga.

10. Anakin Skywalker & Obi-Wan Kenobi€™s Relationship

In the original trilogy Obi-Wan Kenobi talks warmly of Anakin Skywalker. Of course he also told a fair few little white lies concerning Anakin€™s switch to Darth Vader too, so it was good to see the Obi-Wan and Anakin relationship was as genuinely good as Obi-Wan had told us it was when Attack of the Clones rolled around in 2002. 10 years on and Anakin is all grown up. He seems to have made a genuine connection to Obi-Wan, sharing his dreams about his mother and his concerns with the Jedi way of things. Of course, Obi-Wan fails to rein in Anakin€™s rebellious streak when it comes to orders but given the fact barely one Jedi ever seems to follow orders in the Star Wars saga, Anakin wasn€™t doing anything too off track under his master€™s watchful eye. Of course outside of his master€™s watchful eye he was entering into a love affair with Padme. Outside of Anakin€™s rage spurts, we already begin to see the dark side creeping in to his character. Once again fans quibble over Anakin being a whingy teenager but there€™s so much more to the character than that. Lines of dialogue give away a lot. His over confidence in his abilities already has him joking about being more powerful than Yoda and the scene where he brags to Padme that he feels that he is already past Obi-Wan€™s teaching abilities while looking to see if someone might hear, really begins to show signs of the Sith mentality of overcoming one's master. Sure, Anakin is a bit of a complainer but come on, who wasn€™t in their youth, especially when they felt held back from their potential or the things they felt they needed to do. The Anakin and Obi-Wan relationship will hit its most heart breaking in the next article (focusing on Episode III) but for now it€™s good to see that old Obi-Wan's feeling towards Anakin were well founded and Lucas really did give us the first hints towards the pair falling out in Attack of the Clones.
