10 Most Cringe-Worthy Oscar Moments

By Shaun Munro /

It goes without saying that the Oscars is the biggest night in the annual calendar of the film industry, honouring those who have worked so hard to get to where they are, and as such, it's natural that emotions are running high, and crazy things are bound to happen. For all of the classy, noble acceptance speeches, there are dozens of self-satisfied and misguided ones, so many ill-advised dance routines, and then simply unpredictable moments that can never have been expected. Though these moments did liven up the Oscar broadcast a bit, there's no denying that they left us cringing ourselves into a near-coma. The Oscars wouldn't be what they are without them; here are the 10 most cringe-worthy Oscar moments.

10. George Clooney's Pompous Acceptance Speech

To give George Clooney some credit, the guys does seem like he does a lot of humanitarian work; he's raised money for Darfur, he's helped draw attention to genocides the world over, and even received the Summit Peace Award from the Nobel Prize Committee. However, it's a bit rich of Clooney to win a 2006 Oscar for his work on Syriana, then take to the stage and assume that everyone else in Hollywood is quite as good-hearted as him. In a confused speech, Clooney at once admits that Hollywood is out of touch, but then gives the whole industry a giant pat on the back by suggesting that films can help draw attention to pressing social issues. Clooney remarks, "I'm proud to be out of touch", putting an exclamation point on a woefully self-serving and pompous acceptance speech.
