There is of course nothing more important in the marketing of a film than the trailer. A poster can only say and show so much, but a brilliant trailer can instantly send box office tracking off the charts and have everyone talking about it.

But sometimes everyone will be talking about your trailer for the wrong reasons. Oh hey, Aladdin.

Movie trailers are so integral to how a film is ultimately received by the masses that there's an entire industry built on it, with whole companies devoted to the process of conceptualising and editing trailers for big-budget blockbusters.

And while there's undeniable craft involved with piecing together even a fairly mediocre trailer, it's also fair to say that for every great, memorable one, there's a fleet of me-too imitators which try (usually in vain) to strike the same sort of tone.

We all watch so many trailers every single week that we've seen pretty much every trick in the book, though some are certainly better at concealing those tricks than others.
