10. #Gentleminions - Minions: The Rise Of Gru

Okay, so during these lists, we usually focus on events that happen during filming. However, this surprising craze was too good not to include. So let’s say TikTok and the moviegoing experience came together last summer and produced a wildly unexpected result, termed #Gentleminions.

In a nutshell, this trend on the social media platform led to large groups attending showings of Minions: The Rise of Gru dressed in black suits. Mostly male teenagers, some were seen replicating Gru’s hand gesture or even bringing in bananas, an ode to their beloved Minions. Branded as a gesture to honour the films that brought them so much nostalgia, many appreciated the aesthetic.

But not everyone, it seems. Soon after the trend started, “disturbances” in theatres were recounted across social media, including banana messes and disruptive noises. These events led to the BBC reporting of cinemas banning groups of moviegoers wearing formal wear from buying tickers altogether.

Despite these banishments, Minions: The Rise of Gru was still one of the best performers in the summer blockbuster season. And its impressive box office haul was undoubtedly helped by the #Gentleminions. Thanks, TikTok!
