Of all the things directors need to keep up with, keeping production costs low is undoubtedly near the top of the list. And with lower-budget movies, this need is much more acute, so directors always look to save money whenever possible.

Even directors like Michael Bay aren’t immune. During the first day of shooting Ambulance, he planned to film clips of speeding ambulances to insert across the movie. Still, he needed the assistance of the Highway Patrol and a few members of the police.

And while most people see cops on a set, Michael sees an opportunity for freebies. So, he makes his way over to the officers, knowing how popular his movies are among the police community. Immediately, he offers them an appearance in the film.

Eventually, they start shooting before Michael makes his big play. He asks if they could give him a rolling block – essentially a way of making all the cars stop on a live freeway. Not only did they agree, but they let his cars go at 90 miles per hour, all for free. Since the standard way of blocking a freeway for filming costs at least $350,000 and 6 weeks of preparation, Michael’s sweet-talking came through here.
