J.J Abrams' lens flare focused Star Trek reboot in 2009, and 2013s Into Darkness sequel, have reinvigorated the Star Trek franchise, establishing a new universe with infinite possibilities. Into Darkness borrowed many aspects from The Wrath of Khan, including the Khan scream, showing that some of the much loved aspects of the original franchise can still be reinvented to be included in this new universe. The reboot has proven divisive for fans, with many seeing it as a betrayal of the original franchise, and equally as many praising it for breathing life into a dead series. Regardless of how fans received the reboot, the inclusion of aspects of the original series has proven popular. In both films we have heard a Nurse Chapel being referenced, although she is never seen. This is of course a nod towards Majel Barretts character Christine Chapel, who had featured heavily in The Original Series of Star Trek. Neros arrival, and the destruction of The Kelvin, in the opening shots of 2009s Star Trek have caused a new timeline whereby anything is possible. As we learned in Into Darkness, Khan was awakened by Admiral Marcus in order to combat a growing threat. Here the old universe and the new universe are connected through a reinterpretation of a known story. Into Darkness was by most means a success by joining these old and new elements, although arguably it was too reminiscent of the second original Star Trek film. This was done with finesse, yet the plot line was remarkably similar given Abrams' claims to be independent of the original franchise. Both films featured Khan taking over a federation ship, and Kirks climactic death was meaningless to fans of the original, who could see Kirk would survive due to the nearly identical dialogue in this scene to when Spock died in Wrath of Khan. Weve already seen recognisable races altered to fit a new audience. Klingons now feature an updated battle armour and diamond encrusted ridges on their foreheads. With this in mind, we look at what other features of the original franchise we would love to see in the new universe.
