To be clear, no one is hoping that Captain America: Civil War fails or is actively rooting for it to be bad. The Winter Soldier was one of Marvels best efforts and Civil War looks to be building on it in all the right ways. That said, with any movie of this scale, comprised of so many moving parts and people involved, it doesnt take much to derail the entire thing. For starters, there's the fan presumption that it's going to be amazing. Weve seen the dangers of the hype machine before: it can place unfair expectations on films and when those arent met, an otherwise competent film may look even worse in the eyes of the fans. One of the other big dangers for Civil War is that it doesnt just represent a singular outing in a series but an important cog in a massive franchise of films. A lot of Marvels future is riding on its success, from how it changes the landscape of their universe to the introduction of key new characters. How it handles all of these tasks is essential for the future of the MCU and a few missteps could easily lead to Civil War being seen in a negative light. Fingers crossed that none of these are real problems but theres absolutely the possibility that any one of these concerns could be enough to overwhelm the entire film.
